Great Blue Heron

By Lisa Brohl

Lee Hisey called Lisa Brohl in August with a report of a great blue heron who seemed to be sick on Middle Bass at the Hazard’s condominiums. A call went into Back to the Wild, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Castalia, Ohio, for advice. If the bird could be transported to the center, they would see what they could do. Teddi Keith Morris and Bob Stausmire picked up Lisa and Russ Brohl to meet Lee. Lisa was able to catch the bird and she and Russ transported it by boat to South Bass and then to Catawba on the Miller Ferry. There she was met by Lynda David and her neighbors Charlie Miler and Julie Modrzejewski who drove the bird to Back to the Wild. Thanks to the rescue team and to Miller Boat Line for help in rescuing the bird. Unfortunately, the bird was so emaciated and weak that it did not make it. Back to the Wild does wonderful work, we are lucky to have them here in our community! They have provided us with a pet carrier and Kevlar gloves to use for transports. Check them out at www.backtothewild.org.
